Female & Male Dance Technique Differences

by Maximo Califano Principal Ballet Dancer

Maximo Califano Ballet Dance Technique In today's dance world men and women have similar techniques. They both share the same steps and they should be able to perform them as well. But between them, there are some broad differences that need to be addressed.

The main strength for female dancers in the ballet world is the point shoes and the sense of equilibrium. Balance is the most challenging and virtuoso step for women. A great ballerina should be able to stay on one point shoes for a long period of time balancing. In addition, ballerinas should be also able to jump as high as men and turn several pirouettes as well.

Male ballet dancers most relevant characteristics are to jump high and to turn several pirouettes. The balloon effect or elevation is one of the most male virtuoso features. Men have strong legs that allow them to rise higher off the floor creating a stunning flying effect. Moreover, men's physical anatomy allows them to turn multiple times thanks to their triangle shaped back. This physical attribute helps men to turn like spinning top.

Although female and male ballet dancers should be able to performance any step, movement or dance combination, they have different strengths. Women are built to balance thanks to their light complexion and long limbs and men, in the other hand, have a more powerful built helping them to reach incredible heights and to perform multiple turns.
