How to lift a ballerina

maximo califano nutcracker In order to become a great partner, there are several important principles to be considered. People often ask me if it is difficult to do lifts and how heavy ballerinas are. My answer is somehow simple. There are several factors that need to be considered to success in dance partnering.

One of the first and most relevant principles is strength and body position. Men should use their legs to lift the ballerinas and pull their stomachs in to protect their backs. Also, men should be strong doing push-ups and abs daily. I recommend men to go the gym at least three times a week to reinforce their cores, backs, arms and leg muscles. Woman should also be strong working on their abs and back muscles so they are grounded, stable and centered. The weight is always an important issue; therefore, ballerinas should be fit and light to help their partners for lifts and long pas de deux.

Another critical factor is the coordination and communication between partners. Dancers should talk to each other to figure out steps, solve problems and avoid injuries. When big lifts are being exercised, it is recommended to have another guy spotting to prevent falls. In case of a fall, ballerinas should use their hands when falling on the floor and men should always try to catch their partners and lower them safe to the floor.

An equally significant aspect is to mix the skill levels in a partnering class. It is a good idea to combine inexperience guys with more experience ballerinas or vice versa. The more experienced dancers should help the ones with less knowledge. However, when two dancers have no partnering understanding, it is suggested to teach them very slowly with very simple steps.

Another, significant factor is concentration. There is no laughing allow in a partnering class; concentration is vital. If dancers are not focused in what they are doing, injuries can happen.

Body posture, coordination, communication, and concentration are important concepts in partnering. I hope these tips will help you in your journey as a ballet dancer. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me and I will gladly get back to you as soon as possible.
